Who is eligible for Free School Meals?

  • Universal Credit

  • Income Support

  • Income based Jobseeker's Allowance

  • Income related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

  • Support under Part V1 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

  • The guaranteed element of Pension Credit

  • Child Tax Credit provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income that does not exceed £16,190

  • Working Tax Credit run-on - the four week period immediately after their employment ceases, or after they start to work less than 16 hours per week

Who is not eligible for Free School Meals?

A pupil is not eligible for free school meals if their parents:

  • Have no recourse to public funds

    • People admitted to the UK from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) with limited leave to remain are often subject to the condition that they have no recourse to public funds

    • People subject to Immigration Control

    • Economically inactive (not in work or self-employed) arrivals from the EEA, for the first three months after arriving in the UK

  • Are entitled to Working Tax Credit or have a gross annual income of more than £16,190
