VE Day - 80th Anniversary

On 8th May 1945, people across Britain and other countries around the world celebrated the end of World War II in Europe. This day became known as VE Day, which stands for ‘Victory in Europe Day’. It marked the moment when the fighting in Europe stopped, and peace could begin again after years of conflict, hardship and loss.

80 years on, we remember this important moment - not just to look back, but to think about what peace means today and why it still matters (especially as we are still experiencing war in places across the world, some more close to home to our families than we would like).

Peace means laughter instead of fear, dreams instead of danger. When there is peace, families can stay together, children can go to school, and people can build happy, safe lives. Peace gives everyone the chance to grow and learn.

Today, although we do not had the peace across the world we would like, countries work together through organisations, like the United Nations, to solve problems, send help where it’s needed, and to stand up for people’s rights.

80 years on, we remember VE Day not just to celebrate the end of World War II, but to think about how we can protect peace today and in the future.

On Thursday, we will be having a tea party style lunch and children will be learning more about the importance of VE Day. We can’t wait to share the pictures!

World Festivals and Celebrations

May 5th – Buddhist: Buddha’s Birthday Also known as Vesak in some traditions, Buddha’s Birthday celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha. Observed with meditation, prayer, and acts of kindness, it’s a day for Buddhists to reflect on his teachings and compassion.

Look at some of the things we have been getting up to in the last 2 weeks:

It was lovely to return back to school from Easter and jump into Easter celebrations, with our service in Church and then our Annual Easter Egg Competition. Thank you to all of the children who took part. Then to have our first Spring Disco since COVID, we loved every minute of it (and that was just the staff!). A big thank you for all of your support and a special ‘thank you’ to all of the staff who made it possible. We raised just over £500 towards our school fund and had lots of fun in the process.

I have been made aware of a number of online safety concerns and incidents over the past 2 weeks. Please make sure that you know what your child is doing when online and make sure you are regularly checking and discussing the dangers. We do a lot in school to educate the children of the potential dangers online but it is so important that this continues at home when they are more likely to be using gaming platforms, etc.

With Year 6 SATs creeping up on us again, I would just like to say how proud I am of them all. They have worked so hard over their years at All Saints and missed some of the real foundations when schools closed for COVID but have come back so ready to take their end of school assessments and start preparing for their move to high school. I, and I know the whole staff, am in awe of their passion, determination and courage and cannot wait to see them continue to flourish. Well done Year 6 - we wish you all the luck in the world when you take your tests. You’re ready!

We have Parent Governor vacancies on our Governing Body - please look out for further communication on this and if you are interested or want to find out more, get in touch through the school office or find me on the yard.

Lastly, I would like to welcome Miss Kelly to our team starting this next couple of weeks. Miss Kelly will be working in the office alongside Mrs Mason and I am sure everyone will give her a warm welcome!

I hope everyone has a lovely Bank Holiday Monday, whatever you have planned and look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday.

Mrs Flatman
