Helping our brains flourish…

Seeing class assemblies, like Year 4’s class assembly last week always makes me quite emotional. When I think of all of the things that the children are learning every day, I am in awe. I’m in awe of how such young minds develop and soak up knowledge every day, every hour.

Staff work hard to ensure the learning is best fit to meeting the needs of the children in their classes, knowing the children individually helps this happen.

We all learn differently and are motivated by different things. We all have things that we are not as confident at and need that little bit more encouragement. Knowing each child as an individual learner is important to us as a school and helping them to flourish in their own way. This then helps us to support them in being ‘healthier, happier and more confident’. So much of this is also down to the work we do with you as parents and carers too. Our Parents’ Meetings are coming up again after half term. Please look out for these and book an appointment to meet with your child’s class teacher.

Together, we can always achieve more!

Chinese New Year - 29th January 2025

The Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, is one of the most celebrated holidays in the world. In 2025, families around the globe will welcome the Year of the Snake on January 29, marking the beginning of a fresh, prosperous year filled with joy, traditions, and cultural festivities.

Look at all of the things we have been getting up to in the last 2 weeks:

February already! I know I say this a lot (and I’m not sure if it’s my age now!) but time does wiz past us and I love putting together the pictures to see just how much has happened in the 2 weeks since the last Newsletter! It then makes me realise, it’s no wonder time goes so quickly!

Can I please put a plea out about attendance and punctuality. We have started to have a lot of people arriving late and coming through the main entrance. This is not only unsettling for the children, who are having to go into a classroom where their classmates are already learning, but also disrupts the start of the school day for the staff as will need to revisit things in class and so much of the time, stops Mrs Mason being able to answer the phone and support anyone with any questions at the office. Gates are open from 8.35 on both yards, they will be kept open until 9am, this is already in some classes, 15 minutes after we take the children in. Other than exceptional circumstances, we shouldn’t see children coming through the main entrance. While we would always rather them in late, than not at all, we need to look at reducing the amount of lates and absences as they have been rising rapidly since our return in January. Thank you in advance for your help with this.

I have been in and out of classes this last couple of weeks and love it. I love seeing the children learning and excelling in so many different things. I am meeting a new Governor this week and will be sending Parent Governor applications out soon. It is a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in helping to run our school and continually ensure that we are striving for the best for our children - if you are interested in more information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch and keep you eye out for the information before half term.

Newsletter 17.1.25

New Year, New Start?

Working in schools it is always funny to think of New Year as, as a Teacher, a New Year often starts in September… a new class, possibly a new classroom or year group, new responsibilities. Children move up into their next class, get a new teacher and work with new adults and as they move on to secondary school, may be with new classmates, etc. So many changes happen in September for children and in schools that when we come to the New Year in January, it is often less of an impact for children (and staff for that matter).

It does make us think, however, about what ‘new’ means. Almost a fresh look at things, something different, things that we don’t know yet. It then makes me reflect on unknowns, nice ones and not so nice ones, changes and things to come. After the last 5 years as a world we saw how much we can’t predict the future and as a school, we have certainly had a number of changes that we wouldn’t have predicted. Through all of the unknowns though, I don’t think I’ve ever been prouder to work at a school where children, staff and families are all working together to improve things and look after each other, even in difficult times and when things may not go the way you planned it.

For 2025, my wish for all of our school and wider families, is that we can find the joy in the little things and celebrate the amazing achievements of our children every day! Each day is a new adventure, a blank page for us to write how we want - our actions and words create how they go! Let’s make them great ones!

Don’t put too much pressure on the year, make every day count!

BIRTHDAY OF SWAMI VIVEKANANDA - 12th January

Born Narendra Nath Datta in 1863 in Calcutta, he was an Indian Hindu monk who became the chief disciple of the 19th century saint Ramakrishna. Vivekananda, as he became known, was a key figure in the introduction of the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world and helped to develop Hinduism during the latter part of the 19th century to the stage where it held the status of a major world religion. He died in 1902. He pioneered the development of the Ramakrishna Mission and the creation of the Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre movement first in India and then throughout the world, travelling widely and emphasising the devotional and social aspects of the teaching and practice of his beloved Guru, Ramakrishna.

I can’t quite believe we are over half way through January already! At points, I really do have to sit back and have a moment to think about everything that goes on in a week and all that is achieved! Since returning, Miss Tanner and I have been meeting with all of the teachers to look at how well the children are doing and there have been so many positive conversations had, it has been great to see and hear how well the children are doing in all aspects of school life.

Mr Lane has returned and we have been glad to have him back, he will be slowly building up his time, and will be back with us full time by the end of January and I know that many of our families (and staff!) have been glad to see him back with us and well enough to be in work.

It was nice (and sad at the same time to say goodbye) to get a visit from Mr Sharp this week. He spent time with all of the children and we got to give him some gifts to mark his time at All Saints. I am sure that he will pop in from time to time to see the children and staff and he will always be welcome (even if the children tell him all about what we are getting up to while he isn’t here!!!).

Thank you for everyone’s flexibility and understanding to the new arrangements at the end of the day for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. We want to ensure that children are as safe as possible at transition times and it was felt that this change was needed. Bear with us while we make it work but rest assured, at the centre of all we do is the children’s best interests.

Next week promises to be exciting with Year 5 heading to Jodrell Bank and Year 4 preparing for their Class Assembly!

Lastly, can I please remind parents and carers about the importance of the children being here for the start of the school day. Children coming through the school office is not only disruptive for the child themselves but staff at the start of the day and is preventing learning taking place. Punctuality and Attendance has been low the last 2 weeks and we will be working with parents to ensure absence and lates are as low as possible. If you are struggling, please do arrange a meeting with either myself or Miss Caveney through the school office.

Christmas Newsletter

Christmas means different things to different families…

We have had the most fantastic lead up to Christmas in school. With the EYFS Nativity (on the stage this year!), Christmas Dinner, Christmas Parties, our Carols on the yards, our Carol Service in Church and not to mention our Christmas Fair. I can imagine the children (and staff) are exhausted and ready for the Christmas break to spend time with those we hold closest.

After the carol service on Wednesday, I reflected on the ways different people will spend the Christmas holidays. Christians are preparing to celebrate the birth of Jesus however, I know that not all of our families will be celebrating Christmas and hope that whatever the season means to you and your family, you have time to spend with family and friends this holiday and that the children have time to reflect on what they have achieved this term.

Many may have noticed a familiar resemblance in Father Christmas at the Christmas Fair! If you didn’t, look a little closer at the picture above!

I think it is important to not put too much pressure on times of the year like this, enjoy the little things (as the saying goes, as they often become the bigger things). So often, times like this create money worries, and additional stress on families. Please know that we are here to listen and try to help if you are worried about anything.

We would like to wish all of our families a peaceful Christmas and a happy new year and look forward to seeing everyone back in 2025!

25 December (Wednesday) CHRISTMAS DAY Christian Western churches (see also 6 / 7 January for Orthodox Church)

Christmas Day celebrates the birth of Jesus, whom Christians believe to be the son of God. Gifts are given as reminders of the offerings brought to the infant Jesus, and Christmas carols, plays and evergreens are associated with this time, while nativity sets are displayed in many churches and in some homes.

Wow - what a month December has been, with so much going on. I really have been so proud of the children in everything they have done and how many have represented our school. To see the support for the Christmas Fair showed me how much you, as parents and carers want to not only support the school but to hold more community events again like this. Watch this space!

In and amongst all of the Christmas events and fun, the children have been busy doing their end of year assessments and I know from speaking to the teachers, that they are very happy with how the children are all doing this year so far. Seeing the children so proud of their achievements always makes me smile! Although the maths challenges given to me to solve on the yard at lunch are starting to become much more challenging 🤣🙃.

By now you should have received an email about Mr Sharp. As the email said, Mr Sharp has worked at All Saints for 21 years and it will be very sad to say goodbye to him but I am sure he knows he will always be part of the All Saints family and the school’s great history. I would like to say such a big ‘thank you’ to Mr Sharp for all that he has given and done for our school and we hope that he will come to visit the children to say goodbye in the new year.

Many may have noticed that Mr Lane has also been off throughout this last term. Mr Lane has been quite unwell but we hope that he will be back with us at some point in the new year.

I’d like to wish all of our children and families a very happy holidays, whatever you have planned, and look forward to seeing everyone in the new year.

Christmas Events - December 2024

All of the school have been busy decorating our trees again this year as we spread our Christmas spirit with families and our community - we cannot wait to share our Christmas Fair with our families and community this year too. We have also been decorating the inside of school and our classrooms as we prepare for the Christmas holidays.

Year 3 and 4 have been to Heathfield Church to Experience Christmas today and some Year 6 pupils are joining Christ the King in their Carol Service later this week.

We have lots of things to look forward to this next week in the lead up to Christmas (see below for details). We hope to share many of these with you. 

Friday 13th December

Christmas Jumper Day in School (remember not to worry if you don’t have one, just come in your own clothes)

Christmas Fair after school in our school Hall - Entrance through KS1 Playground - EVERYONE welcome - we are very excited to be sharing this with you and raising money for our children.

Newsletter 29.11.24

Sad to say goodbye and saying welcome back and welcome…

Over the next few weeks, and into the new year, there are going to be some key changes to some classes.

I am sorry to say that we will be losing Mrs Bloor (our Year 1 teacher) from our Teaching team on Friday 13th December. Mrs Bloor is getting ready for a very exciting adventure for herself and her family as they move to Australia for a new adventure and new beginning for their family unit. We will all miss Mrs Bloor incredibly but wish her and her family an amazing time on their travels.

We are very happy to say that Mrs Marsden will be returning from her Maternity Leave on Monday 16th December and will be taking over the Class Teacher role for our Year 1 class with the help of Mrs Percival on a Wednesday. Mrs Marsden has been in for a number of days over the last few weeks to get to know the class well.

We also welcome Miss Heffernan to our teaching team. Miss Heffernan will be starting with us in December and will be taking over Miss Tanner’s teaching responsibility in Year 3 from January 2025. Miss Tanner will be moving to share the teaching or Year 6 with Mrs Casey from January 2025.

It is quite unusual to have so many changes mid year but I can assure you the children are at the heart of every decision we make and we have made sure that the change over of staff mid year is able to be as seamless as possible. If anyone has any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in touch through the school office or grab me on the yard.

Next Friday will be another own clothes day and we ask that children can bring in a bottle (either a non-alcoholic, an alcoholic drink or shampoo, bubble bath, etc.) for our bottle tombola for our Christmas Fair on 13th December at 3.15pm! All bottles will be collected from children and stored in a safe place.

A couple of things have really stood out this week for me - the first was a Year 3 child coming to show me some amazing maths work and being so impressed with the perseverance and determination in their approach to problem solving and another was our first Advent Assembly speaking about Kindness - it made me really reflect on the notion of ‘kindness’ and that if everyone’s approach was that of kindness, the world would be a wonderful place to be.

That takes me to an ask. Please could I ask that if there is something that you are worrying about that staff are approached kindly, we are all here to fix it together and our staff care just as much about all of the children as I know you all do. It is difficult when staff are approached in a way that is on occasion confrontational and not in the best interests of working together for the best for your children. Please remember, no member of staff would work in a school if they did not want what is best for your children and no member of staff comes to work to be shouted at. I feel very fortunate to work in a school with so many amazing professionals as well as children and families. As always, if there is anything that you ever would like to discuss, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Three weeks now in the lead up to Christmas - we can’t wait to share the Christmas Fair with everyone on Friday 13th December and hope it will become one of many again.

Newsletter 22.11.24

Past - Present - Future

Well, we’ve had a ball celebrating 60 years of learning in our school building. Monday was 60 years since our current school building was officially opened on 18th November 1964. 60 years on, we are preparing for the possibility of moving into a new school building within the next 5 years and with the possibility of many more memories to be made and learning to take place in a brand new building. The idea is so exciting at the same time as being quite humbling that this will be the next part of our All Saints Story.

Our school’s history is so rich and full with so many memories, many of them some of our school council were lucky enough to hear about from some of the pupils that started in our Nursery 60 years ago when we first moved from the old building. One of the main stories that stood out was that the old building wasn’t seen as fit for purpose because the toilets were outside and that the playground was the street behind the school!

We are SO proud of our school and our children. They have had the best time learning about the different decades that we have been in our school building and they all enjoyed sharing this in Assembly this morning - I am sure they will have told you some stories!

Here’s to looking forward to the future and being thankful for all our school has done for so many in the past.

Thank you to ALL who have been involved in making All Saints the special place it is.

24 November (Sunday) MARTYRDOM OF GURU TEGH BAHADUR (1675) Sikh

Under orders from the Moghul emperor, the ninth Guru was executed in public opposite the Red Fort in Delhi, so sacrificing his head rather than his faith, on behalf of Kashmiri Hindus, who had turned to him for help.

I think this week has been one of my most enjoyable weeks in the 20 years I have been teaching. Seeing the children so engaged about celebrating our birthday and learning about the different decades has been amazing, on top of the fantastic learning that is going on every day as it is. Our Decade Assembly this morning was definitely a huge highlight for me but then, it is so hard to pick out just one this week with party day on Monday, our Afternoon Tea and meeting past pupils on Wednesday and then today’s decade assembly and finishing off the week with the Pantomime! I am sure there have been some stories told at home!

I really would like to thank all of the staff and families for the fantastic effort that has been put into making this week such a success.

It has certainly been a change in temperature this week and we have been sent quite a few challenges our way. Please make sure you are safe this weekend when you are out with the reports of a storm coming and the remains of the ice / snow. Take care.
